Getting to East Hampton
by Car, Bus or Train
|
|
By Car
|
| Regardless of where you're coming from,
you have to get to Route 27 East, also known as Sunrise Highway or Montauk
Highway since it's the only route in and out of the Hamptons as it goes
through all the villages all the way to the end of the island.
There are different ways to get to Route 27 so look at a map for alternate routes. (Zoom out to get an overview of the general area). The instructions below are for the Long Island Expressway (I495).

By Bus |
| The Hampton
Jitney is by far the most popular and
most enduring bus line - there were others which ceased operation.
You can pick up the Jitney at several locations
in Manhattan and at 2 airport connections and then straight out to the
Hamptons. The buses are very comfortable, with luggage racks, air-conditioned,
tray tables and they serve refreshments. A new luxury bus, Amabassador
Service, is equipped with plush extra wide seats, and electric power outlets
for your laptop. And finally, if you're a celebrity hound, this is as
good as it gets - everybody takes the Jitney at some time or another.
Tickets are approximately $27 each way
and you must make a reservation or you won't get on the bus.
A new addition is the WI-RAN service (Wireless Rolling Area Network) which makes it easy for the Blackberry crowd and us laptop die-hards to do our stuff. This page is being updated while I'm on the bus.

By Train |
| The Long
Island Rail Road connects Manhattan to
Montauk. Their Cannonball service is direct with no stops before the Hamptons.
Very luxurious cars with typical amenities such as luggage shelves and
a bar.
Tickets vary depending on the season, between $10 and $17 one way. Reservations are highly recommended to guarantee seats. The train stations are centrally located so you can walk to the center of the villages. |
