Transportation to East Hampton Though located in a remote area of New York State, at the tip of Long Island, the Hamptons are easily accessible by most travel methods - air, sea or land. Of course, if Martians suddenly became interested in vacationing here, we'd probably also have space shuttle services. However, easy does not mean fast, unless you come here by private plane. Since most New Yorkers drive to the Hamptons, the horror stories these travelers like to relate about endless hours sitting in traffic are unfortunately true, unless you come here in February around 2:00 AM, then you can cruise at your favorite speed - though beware of our revenue hungry law enforcement agents. However, no matter how you decide to get here, you must have a car in order to get around. There is no local transportation and consider that the Hamptons include Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, Wainscott, Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton, Watermill, Southampton and other little gems in-between and they're all spread out over a distance of approximately 30 miles East-West and about 7 miles North-South, so that's a lot of walking, ladies and gentlemen. In other words, you cannot go from the beach to a restaurant or your hotel without a car - this is not Miami Beach. Despite all the hype and the seemingly endless party atmosphere, the area is RURAL - like any other farmland in the heartland. This is after all the land of the potato field chateau!
